It is possible that a clearer view of how much Linux could dominate in the server market will come after July 31st -- Microsoft's deadline for companies to commit to its license plan.
Citing a desire to move away from proprietary software systems, such as those sold by Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) , many companies are considering making the jump from using Windows on their servers to running Linux.
Some of the companies and organizations that have already "gone Linux" include Toyota, Home Depot (NYSE: HD) , the U.S. Post Office and Cisco's (Nasdaq: CSCO) printing services arm. Government adherents of Linux include Germany and Mexico.
