Increasing demand for supercomputers to support computing-intense work such as scientific research and engineering design will drive the high-performance computing market to $6.3bn (£3.9bn) in 2007.
According to IDC's performance ratings of supercomputing systems, the sector will see average six per cent annual growth during the next four years.
IDC's rankings of 1,599 high-performance computers found that Japan's 'Earth Simulator,' incorporating technology from NEC, has retained its lead as the top-ranked system.
