ShannonKnowsHPC.com: On Monday June 28, CNET News.com writer Stephen Shankland penned an article entitled “HP Ponders a Less-Glorious Itanium Future.” Since I’ve spent plenty of time thinking about that very topic, and since Stephen has written more than his share of intriguing and thought-provoking articles, I put Nocona on the back burner and focused my attention on Mr. Shankland’s article. It turned out to be a nice piece of work that noted the unintended consequences of x86-with-64bit-extensions technology on Intel’s Itanium game plan. Stephen and I have very few differences of opinion--if we disagree at all, it’s on the issue of “Itanium Everywhere.” Intel would love to see Itanium dominate the market, but HP has no problem with using two different CPU architectures to develop systems that address two distinct markets. Hence, I thought a commentary was in order.
