ClusterVision's clustering technology provides an alternative to traditional supercomputing by connecting multiple computers to form a unified and powerful computing system. This type of computer cluster is also called "Beowulf Cluster". The clusters are built from high-quality commodity computer components and proven open source software technology, and can therefore match the performance and stability of traditional supercomputers for a fraction of the cost.
Computer clusters are now amongst the top 10 fastest supercomputers in the world as can be seen from the recent TOP500 November 2002 supercomputer list. Computer clusters are used by scientists and engineers in universities and companies involved in, for example, oil exploration, drugs discovery and financial modelling.
Every ClusterVision cluster is delivered as a fully functional turnkey system with all hardware and software integrated and configured for immediate deployment. The clusters come pre-configured with the ClusterVisionOS, a Linux-based op erating system and software environment developed by ClusterVision to ease the usage and system administration of clusters.
ClusterVision's organisation is designed to handle large-scale cluster projects, involving detailed planning, complex logistics, extensive testing and tightly controlled production procedures.
ClusterVision will also deliver software and systems for Grid Computing through its GridVision division. Grid Computing enables software applications to integrate computational and information resources, but also instruments and displays that are managed by diverse organisations in widespread locations.
With its head office in Hoofddorp near Amsterdam Airport and a sales and support office in London, ClusterVision will initially focus on the Dutch and UK markets, but plans for expansion into other European countries are being prepared.
ClusterVision was founded by Dr ir Matthijs van Leeuwen and Dr Alex Ninaber. Both received their PhD from British universities where they also lectured (Imperial College and Birkbeck College). Ninaber was co-founder in 1998 of the High Performance Computing division at UK based computer company Compusys Plc. He managed the division together with Van Leeuwen until the middle of last year, when they left Compusys to found ClusterVision. Ninaber and Van Leeuwen have been responsible for the design, implementation and support of some of the largest and most complex clusters in the UK and the Netherlands.
