Hewlett-Packard offers Sun customers $25,000 to switch to HP Linux

NEW YORK, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ.N on Friday targeted customers of struggling competitor Sun Microsystems Inc. HP said the offer is limited to the Americas and includes assessing the transfer of three applications that the customer is currently running on Sun's Solaris operating systems, moving one application to an HP Linux system and the use of an HP computer based on standard technology for 30 days.
Palo Alto-based HP's offer intensifies an already tough pricing environment for large computer servers. Sales of servers have been lackluster for years as corporations, worried about profits, have cut back on technology spending.
