Title: "SGI's Linux Cluster HPC Approach to Scientific and Enterprise Computing"

Abstract: In the Linux environment, tradeoffs are constantly being made between scaling up (i.e. adding more resources to an individual machine) and scaling out (i.e. adding more nodes into a cluster). This talk will explore the approach that SGI has taken to enable engineers and architects to flexibly do both with the same computer architecture and building blocks. The award winning SGI Altix computing architecture, based on the Intel Itanium2 and standard Red Hat or SuSe Linux, will be examined with specific explanations on how the architecture allows both clustering (scaling out) of individual nodes, and scalability (scaling up) of each node from 2 to 512 processors sharing up to 4TB (yes TB!) of physical memory. Also, the Itanium2 Processor Family roadmap will be reviewed.
