(NASDAQ: BRCD) today announced that the Aeronautical Systems Center (ASC) Major Shared Resource Center (MSRC) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, has moved to a 4 gigabit storage infrastructure to lower complexity of data access and management and to meet performance needs driven by rapid growth in data and in compute power. The changes to ASC MSRC's mass storage architecture as well as the recently installed 2,048-processor SGI Altix supercomputer at the ASC MSRC are part of the Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program's Technology Insertion for fiscal year 2005.

x86 Servers Brace for a Hurricane

RealWorldTech: David Kanter has written up a report on IBM's new X3 server architecture at Real World Technologies. IBM's X3 is based on the Hurricane chipset (which is dual core ready) and uses Intel Xeon MPs; the x366 models holds the record for TPC-C, and larger models (up to 32 or 64 processor) will be made available in the future. David's article discusses the basic nodes for the X3, including the snoop filter, remote directory, virtual L4 cache, memory subsystem and I/O subsystem.

AMD and HP Produce Unprecedented Performance Results for Dual-Core Systems Using the PathScale EkoPath Compiler Suite
The recently released version 2.1 of the PathScale Compiler Suite for Linux Clusters has been used exclusively by AMD and HP to produce unprecedented performance benchmark results on dual-core x86 systems, it has been learned. SPEC® CPU2000 benchmarks were submitted recently by HP and AMD to the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC), a non-profit corporation formed to establish, maintain and endorse a standardized set of relevant benchmarks that can be applied to the newest generation of high-performance computers. Both the AMD and HP benchmark results are expected to be made public within the next week or two at http://www.spec.org/ .
