Optimize TCP/IP performance by a factor of four
|
Friday November 05 2004 @ 02:34PM EST views: 235

One of the key components in the TCP/IP protocol stack is the checksum computation, which ensures the integrity of the transferred data. This computation can be greatly accelerated with the use of single instruction, multiple data (SIMD) units prevalent in state-of-the-art processors. This article analyzes a former vectorization effort, shows how it can be improved upon, and then enhances it further.

Secretary Abraham Announces Record Breaking Supercomputer Performance -- DOE and IBM partnership
|
Friday November 05 2004 @ 07:46AM EST views: 162

U.S. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham today announced that a supercomputer developed for the nation’s Stockpile Stewardship Program has attained a record breaking performance of 70.72 teraFLOP/s (trillion floating point operations per second) on the industry standard LINPACK benchmark. Though the supercomputer is running at one quarter its final size for the Department of Energy, the BlueGene/L (BG/L) beta-System is already asserting US leadership in supercomputing.

Cray Misinformation: Re: Quadrics Latency
|
Thursday November 04 2004 @ 08:06AM EST views: 183

LinuxHPC.org recently published an article on the new Cray XD1 where they claim to have the lowest latency in HPC systems, at 1.8us for an MPI short message, 4 times faster than the competition. The Cray XD1 is indeed fast, and by developing custom processor boards and interconnects they've achieved an impressive result, however Quadrics' current generation QsNet II interconnect is faster still at 1.6us for the same MPI latency measurement. More importantly this is achieved by connecting standard commodity 1U dual processor Opteron servers.

Straight talk about building a Linux enterprise cluster with open source tools

Sunday October 31 2004 @ 11:46PM EST views: 208

ITManagersJournal.com: When Karl Kopper joined United National Foods in Auburn, Calif. as an IT consultant, he had his work cut out for him. The company's solitary server was going down every day to the tune of $1,000 a minute in lost revenue. End users would often complain about the system's slow response time. He says, "Because we couldn't print the forms for the warehouse people to select the products to be put on the truck, we'd have dozens of truck drivers sitting in the break room each day for more than 10 minutes."
